what fish do you utilize and sell and how do you ensure sustainability?
We utilize local artisanal line fisherman who form part of our sustainable fishing fleet and crews. All of our skippers and crew members are well versed in the regulatory statutes with regards to seasons, species bag and size limits. Thus ensuring we never over exploit a single species of fish. With tuna being a prolific species on our coastline, they form the majority of our catch and products. The fresh fish that we have on offer as well as some of the other products are all seasonably available. This not only ensure sustainability but traceability as well as the highest possible quality products.
At Cap’n Hook we pride ourselves in not only delivering high quality products, but also in the fact that the preservation of our oceans is of paramount importance. unlike the major corporations who are solely driven by profit, we pride and measure ourselves by a highly ethical standard of values, that put the environment and customers before profits.
We are a family run operation with deep roots in fish and fishing. Our CEO has been involved in the aquaculture, fishing and fish processing sectors for the last 15 years. We were officially founded in 2019, in an era of increasing environmental consciousness, and first hand witnessing of the pillaging of our oceans by major foreign corporations, we decided to take a proactive and innovative approach to the canned and processed fish industry, to bring about awareness and ultimately change in the way we consume and harvest our fish, as well as the fish varieties included in an individuals diet. Thus bringing a wide range of flavor and nutrient profiles as well as evenly distributing fishing pressure across numerous species, ensuring theirs and our own longevity.
We have spent years in the local fishing and aquaculture industries, building and creating processes and our very own fishing fleet, that is centered around ethics such as sustainability and traceability. We have partnered with some of the best minds in various fields pertaining to our industry to not only create some of the most innovative products such as our bottled tuna, using age old family recipes, but to develop more sustainable means of fishing and bringing those fish to the general market. Thus mitigating the need to rely on major corporations who ultimately are the main driving factor behind the destruction of our oceans.
A conventional idea of a sustainable fishery is that it is one that is harvested at a sustainable rate, where the fish population does not decline over time because of fishing practices. Wikipedia
We ensure the sustainable rate of harvest by not only ensuring to limitation guidelines set out by scientists, but we also adhere to our own set of quality control rules to only harvest fish over a certain size, well over the stipulated limit. Thus ensuring that the fish harvested would have had at least two spawning cycles before being harvested, ensuring the longevity of the stocks. Furthermore we mainly utilize handline, or rod and reel as our preferred method of capture, thus ensuring highly selective fishing, in which any and all by catch is return safely to the ocean, completely unharmed.
We have created our fleet of fishing vessels and hand picked each crew member, to ensure that our highly quality standards are adhered to at all times. Furthermore, we have implemented our very own unique tracking and documentation system that allows for each fish or fish product to be traced down to the fisherman, vessel, date and species. By focusing on small batch production we can ensure that this protocol is adhered to and that the highest possible quality products are manufactured for our customers.
